A research group of the Nutrition institute is co-ordinating the public state research program "Nutrition and public health" in which also National Institute of Public Health (NIJZ), Biotechnical Faculty (University of Ljubljana), University Medical Centre Ljubljana and Higher school of applied sciences (VIST) are included. The research group participates in a series of research projects, which are mainly financed by the Republic of Slovenia and the European Commission, but besides also some applied researches for food business operators are carried out. Applied researches for food business operators represent approximately one third of the revenue.

Nutrition institute is engaged in research and education in the field of nutrition and advising the food industry in the formulation and labeling of foods. In the scope of the institute, research group Healthy Nutrition is established, which performs research on food and nutrition.
