Basil Mathioudakis,
European Commission,
Health and Consumers Directorate General (DG
SANCO), Belguim, Head of Unit "Nutrition, food
composition and information"Basil Mathioudakis has a
scientific background having studied first Biochemistry and then
Human Nutrition at the University of London. He joined the
European Commission in 1982. He has worked on food legislation for
25 years covering a variety of dossiers (dietetic foods, food
supplements, nutrition labelling and addition of vitamins and
minerals to foods) before taking charge of the Unit. Since 2004 he
chairs the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health
(SCFCAH) - section General Food Law. As representative of the
European Commission has followed work on the relevant subjects at
international level (Codex Alimentarius, World Health
Organisation, Food and Agriculture Organisation). He also follows
closely the work of the scientific advisory bodies in the area of
Nutrition in general and in particular on the subjects for which
his unit is responsible. For 15 years (1982-1997) he was the
secretary of the Working Group on Nutrition and Dietetic Foods of
the Scientific Committee for Food of the European Commission which
was the predecessor of the European Food Safety Authority.

Patrick Coppens
Senior Adviser on International Food and Health Law and
Scientific Affairs, European Advisory Services (EAS)
Patrick Coppens is a Senior Adviser on International Food and
Health Law and Scientific Affairs at the EAS. He has a university
degree in dietetics and nutrition (Ghent and Louvain) and has
build up substantial expertise in scientific, quality and
regulatory issues in various positions within the Dutch Royal
Numico group. As president of the CIAA (European Food Federation)
and IDACE (European Dietetic Food Federation) Health Claims
working groups he has been closely involved in debates on food
safety, food labelling, health claims and the addition of
nutrients to foods both on a national and an international level.
In January 2005 he joined the EAS, the Brussels-based advisers
specialising in regulatory and strategic advice on nutritional
products. In this capacity he advises a number of trade bodies and
is, in particular, Secretary General of ERNA (the European
Responsible Nutrition Alliance). He also manages the EBF (the
European Botanical Forum) and is a member of the Belgian Food and
Health Plan Steering Committee. Mr Coppens has great expertise in
European food law, in particular with regard to Health Claims and
Nutritional issues and has spoken at
numerous international conferences on these topics.

Joerg Gruenwald, PhD
President analyze & realize ag Berlin, Germany
As a member of the natural products industry for 23 years, first
as medical director of a herbal company and now for 15 years as
president of a leading consulting and research company in the
field of natural products with approx 35 employees, which covers
the areas of food and natural product regulations, product
development and is a fully audited CRO to perform GCP clinical
trials. The presentation covers the company’s experience in
writing more than 30 health claim dossiers for the EFSA and
performing over 200 clinical trials with natural products,
functional foods and dietary supplements. Medical devices and
herbal drugs, many of them for claim substantiation of the EFSA
health claims. Negative and positive examples of EFSA opinions
will be analyzed to learn for future applications and the
development of study designs of clinical trials for claim
substantiation.

Klaus G Grunert, PhD
Aarhus School of Business, Danmark
Professor Dr. Klaus G. Grunert is the founder and director of the
MAPP Centre for Research on Customer
Relations in the Food Sector. As director of MAPP, he has carried
out more than 70 collaboration projects
with the food industry, including many EU FP projects.
He is an expert in consumer perception of functional foods and
author of numerous scientific papers. Some of his latest research
papers includes studies about functional ingredients and its
effect on consumers intention to purchase foods. He also studied
the impact of health-related claims on the perception of other
product attributes.

Elizabeta Mičovič, PhD
Expert on food labelling, food safety and consumer protection,
Ljubljana, Slovenia
She studied food technology at the University of Ljubljana
(Slovenia) and finished her PhD at the University of Maribor
(Slovenia) in the area of food safety, invisible threats and
consumer protection. For 18 years she was employed as a food
technologist in R&D departments of some well known food companies.
After 2002, she was employed at the government institutions where
she worked in the area of food safety, labelling and consumer
protection. In 2005, after working as a health inspector at the
Health Inspectorate of the Republic of Slovenia, she started to
work in the Directorate for Public Health as an advisor on areas
of nutrition, food safety and environmental impacts on health at
the Ministry of Health. She has been attending Working parties for
Foodstuffs at the Council of EU and European Commission as an
expert and a participant from Republic of Slovenia since 2005. She
was a Member of the Consumer Protection Council under the Ministry
of the Economy, as representative of Ministry of Health, from 2005
to 2010. Currently she is Undersecretary at the Ministry of
Agriculture, Forestry and Food of the Republic of Slovenia,
Directorate of Food Safety in Food and Feed Safety and Quality
Division with focus on nutrition and health claims. She is a
leader of the national Experts Group on Nutrition and Health
Claims.

Igor Pravst, PhD
Researcher and head of the Nutrition and Health Claims Support
Unit at the Nutrition Institute, Ljubljana, Slovenia
He obtained his PhD in chemistry at the University of Ljubljana
and worked there for five years as an academic assistant and a
researcher. In 2009 he was employed at the Nutrition Institute
(Slovenia) where he is now both researcher and Head of the
Nutrition and Health Claims Support Unit. He conducts research in
the field of food sciences and nutrition, particularly in
connection with the composition of foods, stability of nutrients,
importance of particular foods for people in connection with the
intake of nutrients and non-nutrients. He is the author of several
scientific papers in well-respected international journals. He has
specialised in dietary bioactive compounds and food constituents,
their role in human health and related food labelling issues. He
is a member of the Experts Group on Nutrition and Health Claims at
the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food of the Republic of
Slovenia which discuss current health claims issues in the
European Union and make recommendations for national decisions. As
an expert in this field he is also an evaluator and prepares
opinions as to whether the use of health-related information on
food is appropriate and in line with the law. |
