To whom is the Conference intended?
The Conference is intended for companies, state
authorities and researchers. As regards companies
encountering foods or dietary supplements in their line of work,
topics will prove especially interesting for associates in development
and quality, technologists, strategists and designers of packaging and
advertisements. The event will also be very interesting to
researchers dealing with the influence of foods and their ingredients
on people’s health.
This year, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) finished
assessing the general health claims and a list of approved
and prohibited claims will be published shortly enabling the inspection services
to supervise
how the claims are used in practice. Year 2012 will be a key year from
this aspect. At the Conference, we will
discuss what this means for companies, community and research
organisations.
About the Conference
The 2012 Health Claims Conference will take place in the year that is
of key importance with regard to the enforcement of the Regulation (EC)
No. 1924/2006 on use of health claims on foods and dietary
supplements. While the
transitional period still enabled the use of many general health
claims, this will change significantly in 2012 with the introduction
of a Community register listing all approved and prohibited claims.
Out of 2,758 claims undergoing assessment, the EFSA has published
favourable opinions on only 20% of claims, which is something that is
going to have a great impact on the market. Companies will
face problems on how to withdraw or replace the rejected claims, what
kind of claims are allowed, how to use the approved claims in an
appropriate manner, how much manoeuvring space they have in forming
texts containing such claims, how the consumers understand them and
how to plan research so as to substantiate new health claims.
